escaping imposter syndrome

I want to start by defining “Imposter Syndrome” in my own words. Imposter Syndrome is when you don’t believe you are as great or as capable as those around you believe you to be. It’s when you don’t think you are good enough, no matter the amount of talent or knowledge that you have.  When your expectations of yourself are exceedingly high or even unrealistic.

So imagine this, you are working towards a goal… and the outcome is just never quite good enough. But, a colleague or friend produces the same outcome and in your eyes it’s perfect. But, it’s the same thing? Your work isn’t good enough because it’s… yours? Now, think about it. How restricting is that?

It is great to have high expectations for yourself, to push yourself to the next level. But, when you push yourself too hard, you actually end up limiting yourself.

So here are my 4 tips for being GREAT without facing what we call Imposter Syndrome.

Step 1: Positive affirmations. Wake up in the morning, grab your cup of coffee, look yourself in the mirror and repeat after me:

I am deserving of the success that I am achieving. I am capable of creating the best version of myself. I am capable of creating the best version of my work. I am talented. I am enough. I am here because of my hard work and dedication. I am exactly where I am meant to be. I am powerful. I deserve this.

Repeat as much as needed.

Step 2: Visualize what success looks like to YOU.

If you don’t have a specific end goal from the very beginning, nothing will seem good enough because you will constantly want “better”. You can set a goal for every step of the way, if that helps you move forward and worry less.

Step 3: Talk about it. It’s okay to ask for help and it’s okay to ask questions. We are constantly developing and learning. You are not expected to be perfect by anyone but yourself. Sometimes the piece that you perceive to be missing is as simple starting a conversation.

Step 4: Pat yourself on the back. You’re here because you earned it and you deserve it. You are doing great things, you will continue to learn and grow and you will continue to do great things. You are impressive. You are improving. You are finding greatness at every step of the way.

Implement these 4 steps into your daily routine and start believing in yourself. You are meant for this!
